Slaves escaping from the British Plantations in South Carolina found freedom in Spanish Florida.

 

Yamassee Indian Woman

Yamassee Indians in South Carolina and Georgia were at war with the British and very sympathetic to the plight of the runaway slave. Many of the enslaved Africans may not have made the journey without the help of the Yamassee.

 

Trapper/Trader
Portrayed by Wamser

The British government relied on trapper/traders to help return runaway slaves to the colonies. Many traders actually worked with the Spanish Government to help return slaves to British clients.

 

Catholic Priest

Runaway slaves were required to convert to Catholicism as part of the settling at Mose.

 

Francisco Menendez

Leader of the Mose militia, Florida's first line of defense against the British forces in the north. Menendez and his company often drilled with the Spanish Garrison from the Castillo de San Marcos.
